One second show

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

BoingBoing reports that the White Stripes played a one-second show in Newfoundland:

Buzz had been building around the city for hours about a secret show, which became a hallmark of the group’s unorthodox tour across Canada. The two-member band, for instance, played in a Halifax pool hall and on a bridge in Winnipeg.

Shortly before the suppertime show on George Street, fans were told the White Stripes would play just a single note. Hundreds of fans were able to make it to the stage in time to see the briefest of concerts.

The crowd cheered loudly after the Stripes played their one note, took a bow, and left the stage.

Video here. Smallist or not, this seems pretty asinine to me.

Minnie’s of Chicago makes a diner-sized assortment of miniature sandwiches. No plans to franchise yet, unfortunately — I guess they’re wary of overexpansion.

Is it me, or is this woman’s built-from-scratch 84 sq. ft. home the spitting image of a Tumbleweed tiny house? On Treehugger, the commenters say yes — it’s from Tumbleweed plans, but she built it from scrap. Fair enough.

Unfortunate name, perhaps, but a nifty concept. The makers say it’s “Designed to transcend function and question furniture as object, art, or image.” Via Treehugger.

Nikon’s holding a microphotography contest. First prize is a $3000 credit for Nikon gear. While you’re there, be sure to check out last year’s contenders, which are all stunning. Pictured, a rat’s ass. Ok, not really. A mouse’s colon.

Plucking DNA

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

Using microscopic, magnetic tweezers, scientists have been able to monitor changes in the length of a DNA strand when exposed to a cancer-fighting drug. It suggests that the drug works by coiling the DNA strand up into telephone-cord-like kinks.

More info on the tweezers here. At least, I think these are the tweezers they used. It’s always so hard to find them when you need them.
